Category Management
Categories decide what each entry belongs to and are the foundation of all statistics and analysis. BookKeep categories are organized into three top-level groups, and each group can have subcategories.
Category structure
| Top-level group | Description | Common examples |
|---|---|---|
| Expense | Everyday spending | Dining, Transportation, Shopping, Housing, Entertainment |
| Income | Money coming in | Salary, Bonus, Red packet, Side job |
| Other | Situations that do not count toward income & expense statistics | Transfers, Reimbursements |
Entries under "Other" are usually recorded together with the "Excluded from income & expense totals" switch.
Where to find it
| App | Location |
|---|---|
| The Android app | "Me → Category Management" (you can also press and hold the category picker on the entry screen to open it) |
| The web app | Left menu, "App Management → Categories" |
| The desktop app | Left navigation, "Manage → Categories" |
Adding a category
- Choose the group to add to (Expense / Income / Other)
- Tap "Add"
- Enter a name and pick an icon and color
- Optional: choose a parent category to make it a second-level subcategory (for example, add "Breakfast" and "Dinner" under "Dining")
- Save
Editing and ordering
- Edit: change the name, icon, or color
- Order: change the order in which categories appear on the entry screen and in statistics
"Excluded from budget" at the category level
When a category is set to "excluded from budget", all entries in that category stop using up budget quota. This suits non-spending categories such as "Investment" or "Loan repayment". For a one-off adjustment on a single entry, tick "excluded from budget" while recording it.
Deleting a category
When a category already has entries, deleting it affects how those entries are displayed by category. Renaming the category (edit) is usually better than deleting it. If you do need to delete one, first make sure no important statistics depend on the entries under it.
Initializing from the template overwrites your current categories
A set of common categories is initialized automatically when a new account is registered. If your categories have gotten messy, you can also use "Initialize from system template" to start over — note that this overwrites your current category setup.
