Income & Expense Insights

Income & expense insights break down your entries from three perspectives — overall summary, categories, and tags: look at the totals first, then drill down layer by layer by category and tag, to see how money is distributed across categories and how it changes over time.

Three perspectives

Transaction overview

The overview cards summarize the key numbers: total income, total expenses, balance, number of entries, average daily expenses, and more. You can also view the income / expense comparison and how the balance changes.

Category analysis

Summarizes entries by category:

  • Amount, share, number of entries, and rank for each category
  • A trend curve for a single category, to see how it changes month by month
  • You can switch between the income side and the expense side

Tag analysis

Summarizes entries by tag:

  • Amount, number of entries, and share for each tag
  • A trend curve for a single tag — for example, "all entries tagged 'business trip'": how much in total, and which month was the highest

The tag perspective is more flexible than categories — one entry can carry multiple tags, so it can answer cross-category questions like "how much did business trips cost this quarter in total".

Filters available during analysis

  • Date range: any period, or view by month
  • Ledger: only see entries of one ledger

How it differs from spending structure

Spending Structure focuses on structural questions such as "the ratio of fixed / variable expenses, the Engel coefficient"; income & expense insights focus on drilling into categories and tags item by item and their trends. The two pages share the same data with different emphases.
