Budgets
Budgets help you keep monthly spending under control. BookKeep supports monthly budgets and provides a yearly budget summary, so overspending is easy to spot at a glance.
Where to find it
| App | Location |
|---|---|
| Android app | "Me → Budgets" |
| Web app | Left menu "Expense Budgets" (switch between monthly / yearly views) |
| Desktop app | Left navigation "Budgets" |
Set a monthly budget
- Choose the month
- Tap "Add budget", enter the amount, and add a note if you like
- Save
Carry over the previous month's budget
If you haven't set a budget for this month yet, you can use "Carry over previous month": the system copies last month's budget amount as this month's budget, so you don't have to enter it again.
Carry-over rules
- Carry-over is not available when this month already has a budget, to avoid setting it twice
- Carry-over is not available when last month has no budget
What you'll see
Once a budget is set, both the budget page and the home page show:
| Metric | Description |
|---|---|
| Total budget | This month's budget amount |
| Used | The amount spent so far this month |
| Remaining | Budget minus used |
| Usage progress | A progress bar shows how fast the budget is being consumed, with a prominent warning as you get close to the limit |
Yearly summary
The web app and the desktop app offer a yearly view: check how your budget held up over the whole year and the month-by-month trend, which is useful for an annual review and planning the next year.
Which expenses don't count toward the budget
- Entries marked "exclude from budget" when recorded
- Categories with "exclude from budget" enabled (suitable for non-spending categories such as investments or loan repayments)
These exclusion rules make sure the budget reflects real "spending pressure".
Budget change history
Every time a budget is added, modified, deleted, or carried over, a change record is kept. You can view the history in the budget details to look back at how the monthly budget was adjusted.
